Real Madrid suffered a blow in the Champions League this midweek as they suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of RB Leipzig away in Germany. It brought an end to their unbeaten streak for the season and also meant that the top spot in the group is still up for grabs, although if Los Blancos manage to beat Celtic on the final matchweek, they will be guaranteed first place.

Of course, Real Madrid’s blow was nothing compared to the one suffered by Barcelona. Inter Milan’s win earlier on the night meant that they knew going into their game against Bayern Munich that they were out of the Champions League, from the group stage for the second season running.

And on top of that, they went on to lose 3-0 against Bayern Munich at Camp Nou, showing that they cannot compete with elite teams at the moment, despite signing Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde, Raphinha, Andreas Christensen and several more in the summer.

Carlo Ancelotti is still not taking the Catalan club lightly though and expects them to challenge for the league till the end of the season. The manager said, as reported by Real Madrid’s official website:

"“I don’t know if Barcelona will be affected by the elimination, but they’re going to be competing until the end to win the league, I’ve no doubt about that. There are moments during the season when players are out, good moments and bad ones.”"

Real Madrid boss comments on Barcelona’s Champions League elimination

Barcelona might have been eliminated from the Champions League, but for the second season running, they will be playing Europa League football.

That means that they will have European football to deal with in midweek, which is good news for Real Madrid, as the Catalan giants won’t be getting any extra rest.

While Barcelona might have had a disaster in the Champions League, the fact of the matter is that they are having a good time in La Liga and completely outplaying a lot of the Spanish sides. Thus, Real Madrid cannot afford to slip up and drop points in the league.
