Real Madrid suffered a blow this weekend in their quest to retain the La Liga title, as they could only manage a 1-1 draw at Santiago Bernabeu against a Girona side that is trying to avoid relegation this season. It was an unexpected result to say the least, even though Carlo Ancelotti’s side were without Karim Benzema and Aurelien Tchouameni on the day.

One man who did not have a good day is Marco Asensio. The Spaniard was brought on as a substitute once again and came agonisingly close to doubling Real Madrid’s lead, after Vinicius Junior had opened the scoring earlier.

Things went south when Girona were controversially handed a penalty kick, with the ball adjudged to have struck Asensio’s arm inside the penalty box. The visitors converted from the spot and Real Madrid could not find a second on the day, meaning the match ended in a draw, with the points being shared.

As a result, Barcelona are now just one point behind Real Madrid in the La Liga table. For Asensio though, there could be much more positive news on the horizon.

Real Madrid ready to offer new contract to Spaniard soon

As reported by Marca, at Valdebebas they think a contract renewal for Asensio would be in the best interests of Real Madrid. There isn’t currently a renewal offer on the table, but the club intend to continue relying on the Spaniard. It is believed that his agent, Jorge Mendes, will receive the message about the renewal soon.

A renewal did not seem to be on the cards for Asensio just a few months back, when he was completely out of the first-team picture, and was being linked with several Premier League clubs.

But he has managed to play his way back into Ancelotti’s plans and deserves a contract renewal.
