For years, Robert Lewandowski had been linked with a move to Real Madrid. It never ended up happening though. That did not stop the Polish striker from carving out a legendary career at Bayern Munich before making the move to Spain this summer, not to the capital but to join Barcelona instead.

Individually, Lewandowski has been brilliant in a Barcelona shirt till now. Yet, the team as a whole continue to struggle to keep up with the elite clubs. They have faced Bayern Munich twice, Inter Milan twice and Real Madrid once this season. Those games have produced four defeats and one draw for Xavi’s side.

So, it is very clear that Barcelona still have a lot of areas to work on. At the same time though, this weekend might have breathed new life into their campaign. First, they got an injury time winner vs Valencia through Lewandowski. And then, Real Madrid shockingly dropped points against relegation-fighting Girona. That leaves the Catalan giants just a point behind Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

As reported by Barca Universal, Lewandowski said about Real Madrid in an interview with La Vanguardia:

"“Our biggest competitor. I hope we are ready in time to get past them.”"

Barcelona might be already out of the Champions League but they are not in a bad position in La Liga at all.

Just a point behind in October is no real deficit at all and there is a lot of the season to be played. Of course, they might have been outplayed and defeated by Real Madrid in the first El Clasico of the season, but a league is not played over two games.

Thus, Real Madrid must be careful not to drop any more points moving forward. While they have been the better team than Barcelona by quite some distance over the season, they will need to be efficient and keep piling up the wins.
