Real Madrid suffered their first defeat of the La Liga season, as they lost 3-2 away at Rayo Vallecano. Luka Modric and Eder Militao were on the scoresheet for Los Blancos but in vain, as the home side came back from 2-1 down to get a famous win over Carlo Ancelotti’s side, who now suddenly finds themselves two points behind Barcelona.

It was a game filled with controversies which we will need to have a look back at. But the only thing that matters right now is that Real Madrid have lost, which is the last thing that they needed ahead of the World Cup break.

In many ways, this felt like the worst performance from Real Madrid this season, and the players just did not seem up for it at times. Of course, one cannot overlook the number of injuries that they have had to deal with in recent times.

As reported by Mundo Deportivo, Lucas Vazquez said on Movistar LaLiga TV after the game:

"“It was a difficult game, they got ahead very early on the scoreboard, we turned it around but the advantage lasted five minutes. It was a psychological blow before the break and in the second the penalty put them ahead, had a couple of chances but it has been difficult for us to draw.“It has been difficult for us to find our football, the one we have always been doing with longer combinations and reaching clearer finishing points. Rayo has been very good.”"

Real Madrid star reacts to tough defeat against Rayo Vallecano to go two points behind Barcelona

Barcelona might have lost the El Clasico, but they have pretty much been perfect in La Liga other than that. On the other hand, Real Madrid have been dropping points lately. Not only did they lose to Rayo Vallecano but they drew the previous game against Girona.

Thus, Real Madrid’s form is starting to become a bit of a worry. They have lost twice, drawn one and won one of their previous four games across all competitions. That is not what you would expect from this side, which was doing nothing but win just a few weeks ago.

In that respect, the World Cup break might be coming at the right time for Real Madrid. They just have one more game to play before that, against Cadiz, which feels must win now.
