Jose Mourinho often does not get the credit that he deserves for the job that he did as Real Madrid manager. La Liga was on the verge of a Barcelona domination that would run for years, when the Portuguese manager arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu, after delivering a treble with Inter Milan. And it was clear that he had a mountain to climb if he wanted to topple Pep Guardiola’s side.

It did not take him long to do that though. In classic Mourinho fashion, he helped create one of the most heated rivalries in football history between Real Madrid and Barcelona.

He would deliver the Copa del Rey in his first season in charge, against all odds, and then the La Liga title the following season. That also marked the end of Guardiola’s run as Barcelona manager and the end of the Catalan club’s peak. When it comes to Europe, Mourinho also helped end Real Madrid’s terrible run in the Champions League in the years leading up to his arrival.

Of course, the end to Mourinho’s run was not the happiest, but at the end of the day, nobody can deny that without him, Barcelona could have gone on to dominate Spanish football for much longer than they actually did.

Mourinho is being linked with a stunning return to Real Madrid

As reported by la Repubblica (via Tribal Football), Mourinho is considering his future at AS Roma. His contract with the club runs until the summer of 2024 but he could seek to leave a year early. On the other hand, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is watching the developments and could welcome back the Portuguese manager should Carlo Ancelotti choose to retire next year.

Considering the manner in which Mourinho’s run as Real Madrid manager ended, not many would have predicted a return to Santiago Bernabeu some day.

Stranger things have happened in football though. Mourinho has returned to Chelsea in the past. On the other hand, Perez has shown with Ancelotti that he is open to bringing a manager back to the club.
