Rumours broke out recently that Real Madrid could turn to Jose Mourinho if Carlo Ancelotti ended up retiring at the end of the season. The Portuguese manager is an interesting name to bring back. Without a doubt he is one of the best managers in the history of football. Would he be the right fit for Los Blancos right now though?

Real Madrid brought back Carlo Ancelotti to great success last time around and the Italian went on to deliver a Champions League and La Liga double. His long-term future at the club is in question though. Initially, it was believed that he was only being brought in as a transitional manager but nobody can argue with success.

On the other hand, the recent years have been lean for Mourinho, who has gone from one of the premier managers in football to struggling to get into the top four with AS Roma.

The winner in him still lives though. He proved that by winning the UEFA Europa Conference League with the Italian club last season.

There are better options for Real Madrid than Mourinho at this stage

There are big question marks over Mourinho and how he has adapted to the modern game. A lot of his brilliance was in getting his players ready to go to war for him. Is he capable of getting that out of the modern day footballer?

On the other hand, there are some managers available, if the situation came where Real Madrid needed to make an appointment, who would be better fits.

Thomas Tuchel is one. We are seeing Chelsea’s struggles since they made the decision to sack him. It is pretty clear that he was getting a lot out of a squad that is not very good at the end of the day, and even delivered the Champions League for the Blues. Someone like the German could be an excellent pick to be Real Madrid boss.

There are several other rising names in the game who could be interesting choices as well and potential long-term solutions for the position, which for all of his brilliance, Ancelotti is not at 63 years of age.

Mourinho is a great manager and he did a lot for Real Madrid in his first stint, breaking Barcelona’s dominance in Spain. Going back to the Portuguese manager might not be the right choice at this point of time.
