Eden Hazard might have dreamed of playing for Real Madrid growing up, but his stint at the club has been nothing short of a nightmare. The Belgian joined in the summer of 2019 in a record move after establishing himself as a Premier League legend during seven glorious years at Chelsea. Not only was he a great player but a global superstar as well, just what Los Blancos needed after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo for Juventus the previous year.
Real Madrid fans were delighted to see Hazard finally in the Royal White jersey. The move had been rumoured about for years beforehand. Unfortunately, it did not take long for things to go off track.
Hazard has had to deal with one injury after another during his spell at Real Madrid. That has meant that he has barely featured for the club over the past three-and-a-half seasons. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has made 72 appearances, scoring 7 goals and providing 11 assists.
Thus, a lot of Real Madrid fans want the club to let Hazard go as soon as possible. The Belgian had an emotional message for the supporters though, talking about his struggles. As reported by Marca, he said:
"“I’m sorry, my friend. I try, but… I’m sorry. I have one more year and I have to prove myself, but it’s not easy: I don’t play, I want to play more. I’m really sorry, I’m sorry for what happened.”"
Hazard apologises to Real Madrid fans for his poor run at the club
It is hard not to feel bad about how things have turned out for Hazard at Real Madrid. He has never made it a secret that it was his dream to play for the club.
On top of his game, there is no doubt that he is one of the best, and most entertaining, players in world football. He has never been able to show that in a Real Madrid shirt though. Years of being on the end of rough tackles from opponents, who had no other way to stop Hazard in full flow, seem to have caught up with him.
His focus for the next month or so will be on the World Cup, as he will lead the Belgian national team in Qatar. He had a standout tournament in 2018 and let’s just hope that we get to see a repeat this time around.
