Real Madrid were not expected to make any additions in January, but one would hope that their downturn in form before the World Cup break has convinced them that some additions are needed even if not major ones. Los Blancos’ squad simply does not have the depth to compete for all three competitions, especially when you consider the gruelling schedule of this campaign due to the World Cup being in the middle of it.

So, hopefully Real Madrid will add to their ranks in the January transfer window and it appears that they have set their eyes on a Chelsea legend, who was heavily linked with a switch to Barcelona in the summer.

As reported by Futbol Total (via SPORT), Real Madrid would be interested in signing César Azpilicueta in January and would be willing to offer a transfer fee close to €10 million for the Spaniard.

Azpilicueta did sign a contract extension with Chelsea in the summer itself but he has not been a first-team regular for the Blues this season.

Real Madrid willing to make transfer offer for Chelsea hero in January

It will be very interesting to see if Chelsea are open to the idea of letting their captain leave the club in the middle of the season.

It might be especially hard to convince them because their season till now has been a bit of a disaster.

Chelsea inexplicably decided to show Thomas Tuchel the exit door just days after the close of the summer transfer window and brought in Graham Potter to replace him. The former Brighton & Hove Albion man has had a tough time though and the Blues headed into the World Cup break on a four-game losing streak.

Thus, under such circumstances, it is hard to see them willing to let the experience of Azpilicueta leave in January.
