Karim Benzema’s season with Real Madrid has been stop-start at best. The Frenchman is a brilliant player without a shadow of a doubt and the current Ballon d’Or holder for that matter, but he has had to deal with continuous fitness issues, since the Champions League opener against Celtic earlier on in the campaign.

Benzema’s recent absence had coincided with a downturn in form for Real Madrid as well, as Los Blancos found themselves two points behind Barcelona going into the World Cup break. That would have been almost unthinkable when they got a dominant 3-1 win in the El Clasico at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The focus of the footballing world has now shifted towards the World Cup though, where Benzema will be representing France. After missing so much of his international career, it is safe to say that he would be very keen to show what he is capable of this time around at the biggest tournament on the planet.

Benzema’s fitness remains a topic of discussion but French teammate, Eduardo Camavinga, had a positive update on the matter. As reported by Managing Madrid, the youngster talked to RMC Sport and he said about the striker’s situation:

"“He’s getting better and is much better now, I expect him to be ready for the World Cup. I have a very good relationship with him, he helps me a lot in Real Madrid and gives me advice during the games. He’s very good communicating, he’s a true leader.”"

It is very positive that Benzema is getting better and one can only hope that he is back to full fitness as soon as possible.

The France squad has been dealing with a number of injuries already though. Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante, who had played key roles in their World Cup triumph in 2018, are both missing. And then, Christopher Nkunku was ruled out of the tournament as well, after suffering an unfortunate injury in training.

Thus, it is safe to say that the French team have been significantly weakened going into the World Cup. One can only hope though that Benzema manages to get through the tournament without suffering any fresh injury problems.
