Real Madrid’s squad depth is not the greatest. We saw injuries and fatigue take its toll on this side in the weeks leading up to the World Cup break, as they went on a poor run of form, which allowed Barcelona to sneak ahead of them in the La Liga table. As a result, Xavi’s side closed out the first half of the season, two points ahead of Los Blancos.
Thus, it will be interesting to see if Real Madrid do decide to make signings in some areas of the pitch or not, when the January transfer window rolls around.
Next summer, they definitely have to make some additions though, especially considering the fact that the contracts of a number of their players are running out and it is still unclear whether they will renew or not.
As reported by SPORT, the main needs for Real Madrid are a left-back, a versatile midfielder and a centre forward.
Real Madrid could strengthen in three positions next summer
Ferland Mendy has been the first-choice left-back at Real Madrid for quite a few years now, while David Alaba has been covering for him in games that he sits out.
Questions have been raised about the Frenchman’s future in recent weeks though, as he is not having a very good season and was even left out of the France national team’s World Cup squad. He is a spectacular defender without a doubt, but there have always been question marks over Mendy’s abilities going forward.
On the other hand, the current deals of Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Dani Ceballos, all run out at the end of this season. The Croatian is expected to continue but the future of the other two is not quite clear yet. Jude Bellingham has been heavily linked with a move to Santiago Bernabeu in recent times as well.
And Real Madrid will definitely need to sign a striker in the near future. Mariano Diaz is expected to leave the club next summer when his contract runs out, which would leave Karim Benzema as the only recognised forward in the squad.
