Barcelona and Real Madrid share one of the most storied rivalries in sport. Thus, it should come as no surprise that it is not expected for a player to end up representing both the clubs. Yet, some of the biggest names in the history of the game, like Ronaldo Nazario, Luis Figo, Samuel Eto’o, have gone on to do so.

Arnau Martinez spent several years at La Masia. The right-back never made a senior appearance for Barcelona though, having left back in 2016.

Now, 19 years of age, Martinez is a man in demand. He helped Girona gain promotion to La Liga last season and he has been playing some very impressive football this time around. It has resulted in him being linked with a return to Barcelona. But the former La Masia player is open to the prospect of joining Real Madrid as well.

As reported by AS, when asked if he would open the door to Real Madrid despite his Barcelona past, Martinez said:

"“I don’t close the door on anyone. What I want is to compete in the best way in the best team that I can, be it Madrid, Barça or another team.”"

Former Barcelona player is open to joining Real Madrid in the future

It is very possible that someone like Martinez could arouse the interest of Real Madrid in the future, if he continues to make waves in the Spanish top flight.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Martinez has scored twice and assisted once in 12 appearances for Girona this season.

On the other hand, Real Madrid might need to strengthen at right-back in the near future. Dani Carvajal is the starter there but he is 30 years of age, while his cover option, Lucas Vazquez, is 31. The club do have Alvaro Odriozola, but he does not seem to have any real future at the Santiago Bernabeu and has not played a single minute of football this season.

Let’s see how Martinez continues to develop moving forward and whether it is enough to lead to Real Madrid making a move.
