After missing so much of his international career, it is safe to say that Karim Benzema would have been looking forward to being part of the World Cup in Qatar. The Real Madrid legend’s hopes of playing in the tournament seem to be hanging by a thread though, after suffering an injury while training with the France national team.
Benzema has not had a good season this time around, despite lifting the Ballon d’Or for his exploits in the previous campaign. He has been dealing with constant injuries, since being forced off the pitch against Celtic in the Champions League opener.
Some people have questioned whether the Frenchman was playing it safe in order to make it to the World Cup without risking any injuries. It is pretty clear by now though that Benzema is actually struggling to remain fit for any consistent length of time.
As reported by ESPN, Benzema could miss the World Cup after suffering an injury in his left thigh while training in Doha. The Frenchman is believed to have felt a strong pain in his quads during a sprint. He is undergoing a scan to find the extent of the issue but there are fears that he will miss the competition after a negative initial diagnosis from the medical staff.
Real Madrid legend could end up missing the World Cup after suffering injury in training
It is safe to say that the situation is far from ideal and one can only hope that the injury is not as serious as the initial suggestions seem to be.
Benzema has missed a majority of his international career and as a result, this World Cup was even more meaningful to him, having seen France lift the previous one, without him in the squad.
The defending champions have been plagued by injuries going into the tournament, with the likes of Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante and Christopher Nkunku already out and Benzema in danger of joining that list.
