Marco Asensio has enjoyed quite the turnaround in fortunes in recent months. The Spaniard was heavily linked with a move away in the summer, with clubs like Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool rumoured to be interested. It did not happen though and he stayed on at Real Madrid, although his current deal runs out at the end of the campaign.
Thus, it is unclear what will happen with Asensio. He has showed his quality and importance to the side in recent times though, even though he is not a starter.
According to stats from Transfermarkt, Asensio has scored 3 goals and provided 3 assists in 15 appearances for Real Madrid this season, while playing just 426 minutes of football in total. That is a solid return for a winger who has mostly been used as an impact substitute by Carlo Ancelotti.
Thus, recently rumours have broken out that Real Madrid are much more open to offering him an extension now than they were a few months back. Asensio is expected to play a big part in Spain’s World Cup campaign as well.
Asensio breaks silence on Real Madrid future
As reported by Marca, during an interview with Radio MARCA, Asensio said about a renewal:
"“There is talk that I am changing Real Madrid’s mind. But I have always tried to give the best that I have inside and then it will be known. The one who decides, too, is the club, it does not only depend on me. After the World Cup, we’ll both make a decision. What if I want to renew? Hopefully it can happen and I’ll be very happy at Real Madrid for many years, hopefully everything will be given to stay for 10 more years”"
It is safe to say that Asensio is not a starter for Real Madrid at the moment. But he still has a role to play in this team for sure and he has actually done a very good job with the limited amount of minutes that he has been given on the pitch by the manager till now.
If he can continue to do so, one would think that his playing time would increase as the season progresses and a renewal would become more likely.
For the time being, his focus has to be on trying to lead the Spanish national team to glory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
