It is safe to say that Marco Asensio’s position at Real Madrid is a lot different now than it was even a couple of months ago. The Spaniard has shown that he is a reliable option to bring off the bench and seems to have moved ahead of Eden Hazard in the pecking order, whose career at Santiago Bernabeu seems to be as good as over.
On the other hand, Asensio was expected to leave in the summer but now, it looks like there is a possibility that he could be handed a contract extension by the club.
While Asensio’s fortunes at Real Madrid might have taken a turn for the best in recent times, one cannot forget that not too long ago, the Spaniard was being linked with a possible switch to Barcelona, when his contract ran out next summer.
For his part, the player did not deny those rumours either. But it looks like it was all a matter of misinterpretation and the Real Madrid star wants to distance himself from the matter. As reported by 90min, while speaking from Spain’s World Cup base, when asked about his previous comments on Barcelona, Asensio said:
"“They were interpreted in many ways. I just said that I was comfortable at Real Madrid.”"
Real Madrid star has explained the controversial Barcelona comment
Asensio seems to be a decent position at Real Madrid right now. He is not a starter, but he has managed to become a part of Carlo Ancelotti’s plans and is being brought off the bench on a consistent basis.
According to stats from Transfermarkt, Asensio has made 15 appearances this season, scoring 3 goals and providing 3 assists in the process of doing so, having played just 426 minutes of football in total.
There have been rumours of a possible extension with Los Blancos as well and it remains to be seen if those end up leading anywhere.
