For most players, the World Cup is an opportunity to show what they are capable of and make a name for themselves at the global stage. We know what one Real Madrid star is capable of very well though. Instead, this tournament was a chance for him to show that he still had the ability to produce it. But Eden Hazard has not been able to take that opportunity.

Hazard had his moments against Canada but overall, he was not great. The Belgian side were outplayed on the day and it was only a penalty miss from Alphonso Davies, which made sure that they got the win and all three points.

There was no such luck for them against Morocco though, who walked out with a 2-0 victory and left Belgium’s World Cup hopes hanging by a thread as a result. On the occasion, Hazard was subdued and could not produce the goods going forward.

Of course, he was not the only player who looked off the pace for Belgium on the day. But as the national team captain, and considering what he has delivered for the Red Devils over the years, hopes were that he would be able to turn back the clock and produce his best in Qatar. That has not been the case till now.

The win over Belgium means that Morocco are in a great position to qualify for the next round. They have to face Canada in the final group game.

On the other hand, Belgium have Croatia standing in front of them and anything other than a win could end their World Cup campaign in the group stage itself.

That is not what anybody would have expected of Belgium’s Golden Generation. That is the reality of the situation though. For a decade, they had arguably the most talented national team on the planet and yet, they could never convert it into a trophy.

Now, it looks like their best years are beyond them. In many ways, the national team is a mirror image of where Hazard is right now in his career.
