Real Madrid interested in €40 million German international

There are not a lot of positions in the current Real Madrid squad which need strengthening. Left-back might be one of them though. Ferland Mendy is brilliant defensively, but he does leave a lot to be desired on the other end of the pitch. He was not even included in France’s World Cup squad and some questions have been raised about his long-term future at Santiago Bernabeu.

Real Madrid do not have an out-and-out replacement for Mendy and David Alaba has acted as his cover. The Frenchman’s history of fitness problems must be a concern for Los Blancos as well.

Thus, it would not come as a major surprise if the club try to sign a left-back in the near future and one of the players on their radar seems to be German international, David Raum, who currently plays for RB Leipzig.

As reported by Mundo Deportivo, Real Madrid would be interested in Raum. It would take a transfer fee close to €40 million to sign him from RB Leipzig.

Real Madrid interested in German international very different to Mendy

Raum is a completely different type of player to Mendy. While the Frenchman is known for his defensive abilities, the German is brilliant on the other end of the pitch.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Raum scored 3 goals and provided 13 assists in 32 appearances in the Bundesliga last season for TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. The season before that, he scored a goal and provided 15 assists in 34 2. Bundesliga appearances for SpVgg Greuther Furth.

That kind of form convinced RB Leipzig to shell out a transfer fee around €26 million to sign Raum. This time around, he has not been as prolific going forward for the Bundesliga giants, but one would expect him to rediscover his form once he adjusts to his new surroundings.

In a short span of time, Raum has gone from playing second division football in Germany to the national team, and at 24 years of age, one would expect him to get even better. Thus, it is not hard to see why Real Madrid might be interested in the left-back. Now, it remains to be seen whether they will end up making a move for him or not.
