Real Madrid have shown an incredible eye for spotting some of the best South American talents. They signed Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo and Federico Valverde, while all of them were still teenagers and they have developed into first-team regulars at Santiago Bernabeu since then. Currently, the club also seem to have their eyes on Endrick of Palmeiras, considered the biggest talent in Brazilian football since Neymar Jr.

One South American talent that they missed out on though is Enzo Fernandez. Rumours have suggested that Real Madrid did have their eyes on him while he was still in Argentina but ultimately, did not end up making a move.

Somebody’s loss was another one’s gain, as Benfica ended up signing Fernandez for a transfer fee believed to be €12 million, and he has proven to be a superhit.

Fernandez has been immensely impressive for Benfica, and is shining at the World Cup for Argentina as well. He scored against Mexico, before providing an assist against Poland, helping his national team get through to the last 16 of the competition. As a result, it should come as no surprise that his transfer value has skyrocketed.

Real Madrid target has €120 million release clause

Initially, there had been suggestions that the Argentine wonderkid could be available for a transfer fee around €85 million. But now as tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, the release clause included into Fernandez’s contract with Benfica is worth €120 million. The Portuguese club have no intention of letting him leave in January.

It is safe to say that while Fernandez is a supreme talent, it is hard to imagine Real Madrid shelling out anywhere close to that in order to sign him.

Let’s see what the future holds for Fernandez but a move to Santiago Bernabeu does not seem to be a realistic proposition considering the current situation.
