The World Cup knockout stages are fast approaching, which also mean that teams have started to make their way out of the tournament. Like every edition, there have been some shocks to say the least and the biggest of them this time around has been the elimination of Germany and Belgium from the group stages itself. There were three Real Madrid players involved.

Antonio Rudiger’s Germany did manage to get a 4-2 win over Costa Rica in their final group stage game but that was not enough for them to finish in the top two of their group, with Spain and Japan making it through.

The German side did the Spaniards a favour by winning. If they had lost to Costa Rica, and they were behind by a 2-1 scoreline at one point of time, then Spain would have been knocked as well, which would have been the shocker of all shockers after their 7-0 win in their first game.

On the other hand, Belgium’s Golden Generation met a sad end with an elimination from the group stage itself, after they could only get a 0-0 draw against Croatia. It means that Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois will be making an early return to Madrid, after both had disappointing World Cup campaigns.

Of course, Germany and Belgium getting knocked out were not the only upsets of the group stage. Denmark, who had made the semi finals of UEFA EURO just last year, ended up finishing bottom of their group.

On the other hand, Uruguay could end up packing their bags soon as well, if results don’t go their way in the final matchday of the group stage.

It has been a World Cup filled with shockers to say the least, and while some Real Madrid players will be delighted to make it to the knockout rounds, others must be very disappointed with how things have turned out for them and their national teams.
