Real Madrid have been linked with several big names in recent times but it is actually smart signings that they might need to make in the January transfer window. Los Blancos have a brilliant set of players but what they are lacking in is depth. If they can increase that, then there is a good chance that Carlo Ancelotti’s team would be able to compete on all three fronts after the World Cup break.

One of the areas that has become a bit of a worry is right-back. Dani Carvajal is the starter there but some questions have been raised about his form. On the other hand, his back up option is Lucas Vazquez. The club have Alvaro Odriozola as well, but he has not played a single minute of football and seems destined for an exit in the near future.

One could argue that Cesar Azpilicueta has outperformed Carvajal at the World Cup. And it looks like Real Madrid have their eyes on the Chelsea star.

As reported by El Nacional, journalist Rob Pratley said about the situation:

"“Real Madrid are considering making an offer in January for Cesar Azpilicueta. They appreciate his versatility and leadership. If Chelsea get a replacement for the right-back, they will consider whether there are any valuable offers.”"

Real Madrid are plotting potential offer for the Chelsea star in the January transfer window

Azpilicueta was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona over the summer before signing a contract extension with Chelsea.

The Spaniard is the captain of the Blues but it is clear that he is no longer a nailed on starter for the club. At the same time, rumours had also suggested that he was keen to return to Spain.

Thus, it would make sense for Real Madrid to try and get a bargain deal done for Azpilicueta. He has plenty of experience himself and could prove to be good competition for Carvajal at right-back.

At the same time though, one has to wonder, is signing another right-back who is past is 30th birthday the right step forward for Real Madrid, who already have Carvajal and Vazquez?
