Lionel Messi and Argentina made their way to the World Cup final by defeating Croatia in the semi-final by a 3-0 scoreline. The PSG star was on the scoresheet himself by putting the ball into the back of the net from the spot in order to open the scoring. It was a great performance overall as well as he set up the third brilliantly with a trademark run. Julian Alvarez was very good as well as he scored a brace and won the penalty. At the end of the day, it was heartbreak for Real Madrid’s Luka Modric though.
But all things considered, Croatia deserve all the respect in the world for making it to the World Cup semi-final. Last time around they had gotten to the final as well and it is pretty clear that they are one of the best teams around and do not get the credit that they deserve. Now, they will be looking to get third place.
When it comes to Modric, it looks like he wants his former Barcelona rival, Messi, to win the World Cup, as he hailed the Argentine after the game.
As reported by Ole (via Mundo Deportivo), the Real Madrid legend said after the semi-final:
"“Hopefully (Messi) wins this World Cup, he is the best player in history and he deserves it.”"
Real Madrid legend wants Messi to win the World Cup
It is safe to say that Messi is one of the best of all time and even though he might have played for Barcelona for most of his career, even Real Madrid fans would not deny him of what he has earned.
The one thing that is missing from his glittering trophy cabinet though is the World Cup and it remains to be seen if he can win it, when Argentina take on France in the final.
When it comes to Modric, it was most probably his last ever World Cup game, as he is 37 years of age now and in the twilight of his career.
