Real Madrid have been brilliant when it comes to the transfer market in recent years. They have not splashed out and have been far more conservative, when compared to their Galactico days. There have been midtable Premier League teams who have spent more on transfers than Los Blancos over the past decade or so.
Yet, Real Madrid have remained one of the best clubs on the planet throughout this period of time. Thus, the club deserve immense credit for how they have planned their squad.
At the same time though, they are definitely facing a dilemma this January. And that revolves around the striker situation at the club.
Karim Benzema is the reigning Ballon d’Or holder and on his day, he is one of the best strikers on the planet. Those days have been few and far between this season though, as the Frenchman has had to deal with one injury after another. As a result, according to stats from Transfermarkt, he has only made 12 appearances till now in this campaign. Unfortunately, Los Blancos do not have a proper back up either, with Mariano Diaz on the fringes of the squad while Rodrygo is not an out-and-out striker and not ready to carry the goalscoring burden of the team.
Real Madrid must avoid transfer mistake this January
Real Madrid need to bring in a striker this January if they are to compete for all three titles in the second half of the season.
Otherwise, this squad might be way too thin. We saw injuries and fatigue catch up to them in the weeks leading up to the World Cup break, which allowed Barcelona to sneak ahead in the title race, and who is to say that won’t happen later on in the campaign as well.
All signs point towards Real Madrid not signing anyone in January, but they need to rethink that strategy. They do not need another major addition up top, but a solid striker who can serve as adequate cover for Benzema would go a long way in helping Carlo Ancelotti’s team.
