Real Madrid have been linked with some of the best performers at the World Cup in recent weeks and Los Blancos do have a long history of signing top players after the biggest tournament in football. Ronaldo Nazario, Fabio Cannavaro, Mesut Ozil, Toni Kroos, Thibaut Courtois, the list goes on and on.
One player that they have been heavily linked with after his performances at the 2022 World Cup is Josko Gvardiol.
Gvardiol was arguably the best defender at the tournament this time around and has earned a lot of plaudits for his performances at the World Cup, as the Croatian national team exceeded expectations once again and finished third in the tournament. Argentina are the champions while France finished runners up.
Gvardiol’s stock has risen significantly after the World Cup though and it is safe to say that Real Madrid are not the only club looking to sign him. The problem is, Los Blancos are not expected to make any additions in January, and other teams might end up taking advantage of that fact.
Chelsea planning move for Real Madrid target in January
As reported by the Mirror, Chelsea are planning to ramp up the pressure on Real Madrid in the transfer race for Gvardiol by making a move to sign him next month.
Chelsea have already gotten a deal over the line for another one of RB Leipzig’s star players in Christopher Nkunku. He will be making the move at the end of the season though. And it would not be a surprise if they try to reach a similar agreement for Gvardiol as well.
That could increase the pressure on Real Madrid to make a decision regarding Gvardiol next month. It is no secret that Los Blancos want to wait till next summer. Could their approach change depending upon the situation though?
