Real Madrid seem to be targeting some of the brightest young prospects in football in order help the club stay one of the best in the world in the future. In that regard, they have been linked with a number of players, and one of the most prominent names on that list is that of Josko Gvardiol.
Gvardiol enjoyed a stellar World Cup campaign and was arguably the best centre-back in the tournament, as many people were left by his combination of strength and maturity at the back at just 20 years of age.
It would have come as no surprise to Real Madrid though, who had come up against Gvardiol when they faced RB Leipzig in the Champions League. In fact, the Croatian defender even scored against Los Blancos in the game away in Germany.
Considering how good Gvardiol was at the World Cup, it is natural that he is being linked with some of the biggest clubs in the world and it looks like Real Madrid are not the ones leading the race to sign him.
Chelsea seem to be leading the race to sign Gvardiol ahead of Real Madrid
As reported by Simon Phillips, so far, Chelsea have laid down the most groundwork to sign Gvardiol out of any other club, and are pushing to sign him as soon as possible.
Of course, one also has to point out that it is believed that Chelsea have recently agreed a deal to sign Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig, by which he will spend the season with the Bundesliga giants and move to London next summer. So, there is a relationship already built in there between the two clubs and it would come as no surprise if they try to do a similar kind of deal for Gvardiol as well.
Let’s see what the future holds for Gvardiol but at the moment, it looks like Real Madrid are trailing the race to sign him, with Chelsea in the lead.
