The 2022 World Cup was a true spectacle and it ended up with a headline grabbing winner in Argentina. Now, Lionel Messi and Emiliano Martinez might be getting most of the headlines after a thrilling final and rightfully so, but there was another Argentine player who was an absolute revelation during the course of the competition. That is none other than Enzo Fernandez and it is no surprise that the midfielder has been linked with Real Madrid.
Real Madrid appear to be looking to strengthen their midfield soon, with the long-term futures of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos unclear. Other than Fernandez, they have been linked with the likes of Jude Bellingham and Manuel Locatelli as well.
It looks like signing Fernandez will not be easy though and Benfica want to keep hold of him at all costs.
As reported by Record, Benfica have refused an offer of €100 million for Fernandez and are firm on not letting him go below his release clause of €120 million. The offer came from an unnamed club.
Benfica have refused blockbuster transfer offer for Real Madrid target
Thus, it is pretty clear that Real Madrid will have to go to great lengths if they want to sign Fernandez in the future.
On the other hand, it is believed that Borussia Dortmund will look for a transfer fee north of €120 million to part ways with Bellingham as well. And it remains to be seen what the situation is with Locatelli.
All things considered, it will be a very costly operation to bring in one of the most exciting young midfielders in the game to Santiago Bernabeu and it remains to be seen if the club are able to pull it off or not.
There is no doubt that Fernandez could be an incredible addition to this Real Madrid side. But would he make enough of a difference when considering the transfer fee that it is expected to take to sign him?
