When Real Madrid signed Martin Odegaard, he was one of the most exciting teenagers in world football and the expectation was that he would develop into a first-team star for Los Blancos. Unfortunately, that did not happen and he eventually left Santiago Bernabeu in order to join Arsenal.

Odegaard is certainly playing some world-class football in an Arsenal shirt though and finally delivering on the potential that he had been showing during his youth days.

Still just 24 years of age, he is already captaining Arsenal and has been one of the biggest reasons behind them sitting at the top of the Premier League table against all odds and expectations.

With Odegaard’s upturn in form and with the long-term futures of both Luka Modric and Toni Kroos unclear at this point of time, could a return to Real Madrid make sense for the Norwegian star in the future?

Real Madrid have Odegaard clause in Arsenal deal

As reported by Evening Standard, according to football journalist Ramon Alvarez de Mon, Real Madrid have first refusal on Odegaard should he leave Arsenal.

It remains to be seen if Real Madrid ever get the chance or try to exercise that clause or not, but it is certainly a nice option to have, especially seeing the quality of football that Odegaard is producing at the moment.

He was always a very talented player and had all the attributes to be a star for a top team, but even then, not many would have expected him to develop into this kind of a player so soon after joining Arsenal.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Odegaard has scored 6 goals and provided 4 assists in 14 Premier League games this season. That is brilliant for someone who has never had the reputation for being a proper goalscoring midfielder.

Thus, Mikel Arteta deserves a lot of credit for the job that he has done with Odegaard and with Arsenal as a whole, and it also goes to show that patience remains a virtue in football. Could the Norwegian return to Real Madrid someday? Only time shall tell.
