Real Madrid are believed to be looking to transform their midfield in the near future. The long-terms futures of both Luka Modric and Toni Kroos are up in the air, while Dani Ceballos could potentially end up leaving the club when his contract runs out next year. As a result, it is clear that the club need to make additions in the middle of the park.

Jude Bellingham is believed to be the top priority for Real Madrid when it comes to signing midfielders, but he is not the only one that they are looking at. Enzo Fernandez is rumoured to be their alternative target to the Englishman.

Fernandez enjoyed a stunning World Cup campaign and helped Argentina to the title. And it is safe to say that his reputation in the game has skyrocketed since then. And it looks like it is Chelsea who have moved ahead of everyone else in the race to sign him from Benfica in January.

As tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, Fernandez has already said yes to Chelsea and the Blues are now in direct talks with Benfica for the midfielder.

It remains to be seen if Chelsea are able to agree a deal with Benfica to sign Fernandez or not. It is believed that the Argentine has a €120 million release clause.

But there have been suggestions that Chelsea are trying to offer them a bigger fee than that in order to make sure that the payment structure is different and suits the Blues.

Of course, Fernandez is someone that Real Madrid have been linked with recently, but their top target has always been Bellingham and it does feel like they are ahead in the race to sign him. Thus, whether the Argentine ends up joining Chelsea or not, it might not end up having any effect in the transfer plans of the Spanish giants.
