Real Madrid and Chelsea have been involved in some very entertaining Champions League ties in recent years. On the other hand, the two clubs have been competing to sign some of the biggest talents in the game as well. Los Blancos came out on top in the Endrick race but they are believed to have several other common transfer targets.

One of them is believed to be Enzo Fernandez and Chelsea signing the Argentine World Cup hero would be a blow for Real Madrid in more ways than one, both directly and indirectly.

Firstly, Fernandez is believed to be Real Madrid’s alternative target in case they miss out on Jude Bellingham. Secondly, if Chelsea sign the Argentine for a huge fee then that would only increase the transfer value of the Borussia Dortmund star as well. And finally, if the Benfica star is off the market, then other clubs’ interest in the English midfielder will multiply.

It had started to look like a move to Stamford Bridge was only a matter of time for Fernandez. But now, things seem to have taken a twist.

As tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, there is no agreement after new meeting today between Chelsea and Benfica for Fernandez. It was never a done deal, it’s not a done deal as of now. After meetings and talks, there’s still no agreement on key details, on clause and payment terms.

Rumours have suggested that Chelsea are willing to shell out more than the €120 million release clause in Fernandez’s deal but they want to pay the figure in instalments. On the other hand, Benfica want it all up front.

As a result, it is very possible that that is what is holding up the deal at the moment. If Chelsea are unable to sign Fernandez, that would be great news for Real Madrid.
