Real Madrid have a history of signing some of the top performers from the World Cup. This time around, the situation looks set to be a bit different though, with the tournament being played in the middle of the season. Los Blancos are not expected to make further additions to their ranks in January. Yet, one player who is rumoured to have caught their eye is Josko Gvardiol.

Gvardiol was incredible at the World Cup. He was perhaps the best defender at the tournament, as he helped the Croatian national team to a third place finish.

Unsurprisingly, his stock has skyrocketed after the World Cup, with one of the clubs believed to be interested being Real Madrid. While a move in January is pretty much impossible, a summer move could be more probable.

But as tweeted out by Florian Plettenberg, Gvardiol wants to stay at RB Leipzig beyond this summer. But in the summer of 2024 things will become hot, with his release clause being about €110 million.

It looks like Gvardiol wants to stay put at RB Leipzig for the time being and it is not hard to understand why. He is playing regular football there, at one of the top clubs in the Bundesliga, and developing at an impressive rate.

At the end of the day, he is just 20 years of age and has plenty of time on his hands to get a big move elsewhere in the future.

Real Madrid, of course, have seen him in action from up close, having come up against RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League group stages this season. Gvardiol even scored against Carlo Ancelotti’s side in the game in Germany.

It remains to be seen what the future holds and things can change quickly in football. But a move next summer might not be on the cards.
