Barcelona got a tough away win against Atletico Madrid in order to go three points clear at the top of the La Liga table, with Real Madrid losing against Villarreal this weekend. This is also the biggest lead that Xaviās side have had this season, and it is something that nobody would have seen coming when they lost the first El Clasico of the campaign convincingly and Los Blancos were looking unstoppable.
Thatās how quickly things can change in football though and they certainly have for Carlo Ancelottiās side, who have looked unconvincing for quite some time now.
Despite that, Real Madrid are not believed to have any plans of making additions to their squad in January, which has understandably left fans worried, especially with the exhausting fixture of games coming up for a team that looks out of form and does not have a lot of depth.
As reported by SPORT, Xavi said after Barcelonaās win away against Atletico Madrid:
"āThese are three golden points. We knew how to suffer (after). Itās important to have kept a clean sheet. Without playing that well, we got the three points. It was a tough game but a big win.āItās not just three points, itās a huge morale boost. I am proud of the team. We have made a statement that we are candidates to win the league.ā"
Xavi makes statement as Barcelona go three points clear of Real Madrid
The fact of the matter is that there is still a lot of football left to be played and in the grand scheme of things, a three point lead at the top of the table is nothing significant.
At the same time though, one cannot deny that Real Madridās form as a team and that of some key players, has been extremely worrying recently. If things continue on this path, the club might have a tough time catching up with Xaviās side. One can only hope that they get back to winning ways as soon as possible.
The Catalan giantsā confidence must have received a major boost after their win over Atletico Madrid as well, after struggling against top opposition throughout the season till now, having lost to the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan already.
