Real Madrid suffered a one-sided defeat at the hands of Barcelona in the final of the Spanish Super Cup. The 3-1 scoreline does not even begin to tell the story of the match. It was not even remotely as close and if not for the brilliance of Thibaut Courtois in goal, with the Belgian being the club’s only consistent performer this season, the Catalan giants could have scored many more on the night.

Following the World Cup, this Real Madrid team has looked extremely sluggish, as it appears that fatigue and injuries might be starting to have an effect on their season.

Despite it being a final against Barcelona, there did not appear to be any energy or emergency about their performance. And this has always been the fear for many Real Madrid fans, that their lack of depth would ultimately catch up to them.

The stance has always been to not add any players to the squad in January, but it is quite clear that there is a need to. And some fans would have been hoping that their recent downturn in form would force the club to rethink the situation. But it does not look like that will be the case after all.

As reported by MARCA, the idea of not signing anyone in the winter transfer window still stands, exactly the same as twelve months ago.

Of course, Real Madrid had found themselves in a difficult phase around this time last season as well but ultimately got through it to win both the Champions League and La Liga. One can only hope that they rediscover their best in the business end of this campaign as well.

Following the Spanish Super Cup final defeat at the hands of Barcelona, the upcoming Copa del Rey Round of 16 game vs Villarreal is now even more important than it was before.
