Real Madrid are going through a rough patch of form in recent times and it would be wrong to blame any one individual player for how things have gone for the club over the past several weeks. They have seemed sluggish and other than Thibaut Courtois, nobody has been able to produce the goods on a consistent basis.

That has resulted in them losing the Spanish Super Cup final to Barcelona, while they also trail in the La Liga title race to the Catalan giants by three points owing to their defeat at the hands of Villarreal.

One player who has been particularly disappointing after the World Cup break is Luka Modric. The midfield maestro has seemed exhausted at times and struggled to match his own incredibly high standards.

On the other hand, it looks like Guti believes that Real Madrid do not need Modric. As reported by Tribuna, the club legend told El Chiringuito:

"“I have doubts with Luka Modric. He won’t have his space [next season]. Real Madrid don’t need him. I don’t know if Bellingham or another midfielder will come, but he has to leave at some point.”"

It is safe to say that Modric has not looked at his best in recent times but it might be way too early to count the Croatian legend out for good.

It is important to remember that he was performing at a very high level in the first half of the season for Real Madrid and was one of the best performers at the recent World Cup, as Croatia managed to finish in third place.

Maybe Modric needs some rest though, as he is 37 years of age and has been playing constant football for quite some time. The problem is, the high profile games keep coming thick and fast for Real Madrid.

Real Madrid’s next game is against Villarreal, in the Round of 16 of the Copa del Rey, and it is safe to say that it has become even more important thanks to the events of the past few weeks.
