Real Madrid star answers critics with performance vs Athletic Bilbao
The 3-2 win over Villarreal in the Copa del Rey was a huge boost for Real Madrid and it is great to see that Carlo Ancelotti’s side have built on that, with a 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao at San Mames. The goals came from Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos, but there was another player who must have been delighted with his performance and answered a lot of critics.
A number of Real Madrid players have looked off colour after the World Cup break, but one whose performances have come under heavy criticism is Antonio Rudiger.
Rudiger arrived in the summer on a free transfer, after his contract ran out at Chelsea. During his last 18 months or so at Stamford Bridge, he had been one of the best defenders in the world. But we have not really seen much of that in a Real Madrid shirt till now.
After a number of bad performances, Rudiger did put up a big display vs Athletic Bilbao though, as Real Madrid walked out of San Mames with not just three points but a clean sheet as well, something that has been rare for Los Blancos this season.
Real Madrid star answers critics with big performance vs Athletic Bilbao
Rudiger’s performance vs Athletic Bilbao was certainly a step in the right direction. He looked the best that he has in a long time.
Now, it is about him building on his performance and going on a good run of form, because if Real Madrid are to be successful this season, they need him to deliver. We all know what the German centre-back is capable of at his best.
Of course, there are several other players who deserve praise, as Real Madrid got themselves an important win under pressure. Hopefully, things will only get better from here and they will rediscover their form.
