Right-back remains an area of worry for Real Madrid. Dani Carvajal might be a club legend but his performance levels have dropped drastically in recent times and he is struggling to remain fit as well. At the same time, Lucas Vazquez is also 31 years of age and not a real solution in that position either. And Alvaro Odriozola is expected to depart the club soon, after struggling for chances.

Thus, it is pretty clear that Real Madrid will need to strengthen at right-back in the not too distant future, although they are not expected to make any signings this January.

The club’s inactivity in January could allow Chelsea to swoop in and sign one of their rumoured right-back targets though, in the form of Malo Gusto. And it looks like the Blues have already taken some huge steps in the quest to sign the player from Lyon this January.

As tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are in direct contact with Lyon for Gusto. Personal terms are already agreed on long term deal, with the player open to the move. The French club are yet to accept a transfer bid though.

It is believed that Lyon want Gusto to stay till the end of the season. But with his current deal running out in the summer of 2024, they might have a tough time turning down a significant offer from Chelsea.

Chelsea do need to add to their options at right-back as soon as possible with the injury problems that Reece James has had to deal with in recent times.

Of course, Chelsea’s interest in Gusto is bad news for Real Madrid and it is very possible that the Blues could get a deal over the line before the January transfer window slams shut.
