Real Madrid must target Inter Milan star for free transfer

When Real Madrid signed Antonio Rudiger on a free transfer last summer, the hope was that it would turn them into one of the best defensive sides on the planet. On one hand, the club were already the Champions League holders. And on top of that, the German international had been one of the best centre-backs in the world during his last 18 months at Chelsea under the management of Thomas Tuchel.

While Tuchel might have gotten the best out of Rudiger at Chelsea, his form at Real Madrid has been questionable at best. There have been some good performances but the majority of them have ranged from mediocre to bad.

On the other hand, Real Madrid’s other defenders have not covered themselves in glory either and they have been poor at the back this season.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side have conceded 16 goals in 17 La Liga games this season. That is despite the fact that Thibaut Courtois has been in inspired form between the posts and otherwise, that number could have been a lot higher. In contrast, Barcelona have conceded just 6 and it should come as no surprise that Xavi’s side are leading the title race.

Thus, it is pretty clear that Real Madrid need to strengthen at the back in the summer and could a centre-back from Inter Milan prove to be the solution?

Milan Skriniar has been one of the best centre-backs in Serie A, a league known for its defenders, for the last several years. His current deal with Inter Milan runs out in the summer though and he is unlikely to extend his deal.

The chance to sign a player of Skriniar’s quality on a free transfer, in the middle of his prime, does not come around often and Real Madrid must take advantage.
