Chelsea have continued to splash out this January, after a record summer. The Blues currently find themselves in a terrible position in the Premier League and surely must be hoping to improve in the second half of the campaign. But at the same time, they have one eye on the future as well, and are already getting deals in place for next summer. Their latest addition just happens to be a right-back Real Madrid have been linked with on numerous occasions.
It is no secret that right-back is a position of worry for Real Madrid at this point of time. Dani Carvajal is 31 years of age and seems to be on a downward trajectory, both in terms of form and fitness. On the other hand, Lucas Vazquez is the same age and not a long-term solution, while Alvaro Odriozola is expected to leave soon.
One player that they have been rumoured to be keeping an eye on is Malo Gusto of Lyon, who has made quite the impression in France.
At 19 years of age, Gusto is already a regular starter for the Ligue 1 giants. Unfortunately, his future does not go through Santiago Bernabeu though.
Chelsea agree €30 million deal to sign Real Madrid target
As reported by The Athletic, Chelsea have reached an agreement in principle with Lyon to sign Gusto. They will pay an initial transfer fee of €30 million (£26.3 million) plus add-ons for the 19-year-old, who will join the Blues in the summer.
There is no doubt that Gusto is a top talent. It is not easy to be a nailed on starter for Lyon at 19 years of age. Chelsea already have Reece James as well, who on his day might very well be the best right-back on the planet, even though he has had his fair share of injury problems.
Thus, their depth at right-back is incredible, something that cannot be said about this current Real Madrid squad.
