Karim Benzema might have endured a difficult first half of the season, but he certainly seems to be coming into his own after the World Cup break. The Frenchman got himself another important goal, as he put Real Madrid 2-1 ahead against Atletico Madrid in extra-time in the Copa del Rey quarter-final, before Vinicius Junior’s late strike sealed the win for good.
It was another promising performance from Benzema to say the least, and even more important than the goals is the fact that he is looking fit once again.
The Frenchman had struggled with one injury after another in the first half of the campaign, which resulted in him having to spend several spells out on the sidelines and prevented him from picking up any rhythm. The story has been different after the World Cup break though, as he has scored 7 goals in the past 7 games.
That is the kind of form that you would have associated with him last season and if Real Madrid are to compete for all three domestic titles this season, they will need Benzema at his best.
Benzema sends clear message about fitness after Real Madrid win
As reported by Real Madrid’s official website, when asked about his fitness, Benzema said:
"“I’m feeling 100%, contributing to the team and hopefully I’ll keep scoring goals.”"
While Benzema has not been at his best this season by any stretch of the imagination, his scoring record is still very solid, when he has been on the pitch.
The Frenchman has not struggled putting the ball into the back of the net, what he has struggled at is staying fit. If he can stay injury-free in the second half of the season, then that would be spectacular news for Real Madrid.
Of course, there are several others whose performances vs Atletico Madrid deserve praise as well. Rodrygo scored an incredible goal to tie the game in the second half, when it was looking like Diego Simeone’s side were on their way to victory. And Vinicius Jr was also very good on the night. Dani Ceballos and Eduardo Camavinga put in positive displays as well.
