Real Madrid’s activity in January has certainly confused a lot of fans. It was public knowledge for a while that the club did not want to make any additions in the middle of the season. But considering the situation over the past several weeks, perhaps they should have had a rethink about their stance.

At the moment, this looks like a Real Madrid team that has run out of steam due to a combination of fatigue, injuries and general lack of depth in the squad. Both the performances and the results after the World Cup break have been concerning.

There are several areas of the pitch where they look extremely light on options and could have done with some additions. The full-back positions are certainly amongst them.

As reported by ABC (via Manchester Evening News), Cancelo was offered to Real Madrid this winter by his agent.

It looks like Real Madrid turned down the opportunity to sign Cancelo from Manchester City on a loan deal and he has ended up joining Bayern Munich instead.

Up until a few months back, Cancelo was considered as one of the best full-backs on the planet and an elite player in the Premier League. Thus, it goes without saying that signing someone of his quality on loan in the middle of the season could have proven to be an absolute masterstroke for a Real Madrid team that has been struggling lately.

Now, one can only hope that the players who are struggling with injury problems at the moment, return to the pitch soon and manage to stay fit for the rest of the season. When Real Madrid are near full-strength, we have seen what they are capable of, as they looked absolutely unstoppable early on in the campaign before losing their path in the weeks leading up to the World Cup.
