Real Madrid suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat at the hands of Mallorca, to hand Barcelona the chance to go eight points clear at the top of the table when they take on Sevilla. It was not a good day for Carlo Ancelotti’s side to say the least, who struggled badly going forward. They took 20 shots on the day, but managed to keep only one of them on target while missing a penalty kick as well.

While Asensio missed from the spot, it was Nacho’s own goal which proved to determine the destination of the three points. Everything that could have gone wrong for Real Madrid on the day, pretty much did.

Of course, it was great news for Barcelona. Xavi’s side are already leading the table by five points and have looked like the much better team in recent months, even getting a dominant win over Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final. If they can extend their lead further, with a win over Sevilla, then the title race would very much be in their control.

Interestingly, it appeared that Barcelona were trolling Real Madrid following their defeat against Mallorca, by posting a picture of Xavi smiling accompanied by a ‘smiling emoji’ on Twitter, just minutes after the final whistle.

It remains to be seen how the rest of the title race turns out, but at the moment, Barcelona are looking like heavy favourites.

Things can change very quickly in football though. Real Madrid were looking unstoppable at the start of this very season, and now, things looks so bad for them.

Thus, it is very possible that things could go south for Barcelona as well, or Real Madrid could rediscover their best form. Times are tough right now. But tough times never last.
