Real Madrid need to bring in reinforcements all over the pitch. Surprisingly, one of them could be centre-back. When the club signed Antonio Rudiger on a free transfer, it was believed that that would transform Los Blancos’ backline into one of the best on the planet. Unfortunately, that has not happened.
Rudiger might have been one of the best defenders in the world during his last 18 months at Chelsea, under the management of Thomas Tuchel, but he has failed to rediscover that form at Real Madrid. The likes of David Alaba and Eder Militao have been inconsistent as well. And Nacho is 33 years of age, and could very possibly be on his way out at the end of the campaign.
Thus, it would not be a bad idea for Real Madrid to look for another centre-back next summer and there is some good news in that regard.
As reported by Calciomercato.it, Josko Gvardiol has already chosen his next destination: Real Madrid. Los Blancos have put him on their list of targets as well. But while they seem to be in pole position for the Croatian centre-back, an agreement with RB Leipzig is yet to be found.
€100 million-rated defender wants to join Real Madrid but race still open
Chelsea were heavily linked with Gvardiol as well but after signing Benoit Badiashile, and his good performances, their interest might have cooled a bit. Manchester United and Liverpool are still believed to be keeping an eye on the Croatian international though.
Gvardiol’s stock has skyrocketed after the World Cup, as he was arguably the best centre-back in the tournament, as Croatia finished third.
There were many who believed that Gvardiol could end up leaving RB Leipzig in January itself but that has not happened. An exit in the summer seems more than likely though. He could be an excellent addition for Real Madrid and fit the profile that the club have looked for in recent years. But the transfer fee is expected to be a very big one and let’s see if Los Blancos make a move or not.
