Carlo Ancelotti was expected to be safe in the Santiago Bernabeu hot seat, after guiding Real Madrid to an unlikely Champions League and La Liga double last season. When the Italian was brought back for a second stint at the club, many had believed that he was only a transitional coach, but the results showed otherwise.
Things change very quickly in football though and Ancelotti’s situation is proof of that. After losing the Spanish Super Cup final against Barcelona, and falling eight points behind the Catalan giants in the La Liga title race, there are big question marks over the future of the Italian manager at Santiago Bernabeu.
With how underwhelming Real Madrid have looked in recent times, many fans are wondering whether it is time to make a change in the managerial hot seat. At the same time though, it is important to recognize how limited Ancelotti’s options are right now, partly due to a lack of squad depth and partly due to a never ending list of injuries.
If Ancelotti is shown the exit door though, there would not be a lack of managers who would be interested in the Real Madrid job.
Champions League finalist wants to be Real Madrid manager
As reported by the Daily Star, Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with Leeds United, but it is understood that the former Tottenham Hotspur and PSG manager would prefer to hold out for the Real Madrid job in the hope that it becomes available.
Pochettino was one of the most highly regarded managers in world football when he was at Tottenham Hotspur. He got them into a couple of unexpected title challenges and also reached the Champions League final, even though he was never able to win any silverware with the Premier League club.
Silverware did come at PSG but Pochettino’s time at the club was not seen as a success, as he was unable to get the best out of a team consisting of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.
Pochettino has been linked with the Real Madrid job on numerous occasions in the past though, and if it became available, he could certainly be considered for it.
