Real Madrid fans were left with a bitter taste in their mouths, with how the Kylian Mbappe saga turned out last year. For a long while, it had looked like the French superstar was destined to end up in the Spanish capital in the summer when his contract ran out, so much so that he was applauded by the Santiago Bernabeu crowd, when PSG played there last season in the Champions League Round of 16.

In an unexpected turn of events though, Mbappe ended up extending his contract with PSG, meaning a move to Real Madrid was off.

Many Real Madrid fans did not want to see Mbappe being ever linked with the club again, after how things turned out. And yet, as the months have passed, and the Frenchman has continued to perform at the highest level, it now feels like the support would welcome him with open arms, if he did arrive in the Spanish capital in the future.

The rumours linking him with Real Madrid have never quite gone away. On the other hand, as reported by MARCA, if Bayern Munich knock out PSG, Mbappe could ask to leave the club in the summer. Another Champions League failure might very well be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

Mbappe might have extended his contract with PSG, but it was not really a long-term deal. Rumours have suggested that it runs till the summer of 2024, with the option to extend it for a further year.

Thus, he will have only one year left on his contract next summer. Yet, PSG are not expected to make it easy for Mbappe to leave.

And with the relationship between PSG and Real Madrid believed to be frosty, a direct move between the two feels unlikely. Never say never in football though.
