Considering the manner in which the Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid saga came to an end last year, most fans would have expected the French superstar to never be linked with Los Blancos ever again. For a long time, it had looked like he was destined to join the Spanish giants as a free agent in the summer, when his contract with PSG ran out. So much so that he was applauded by the Santiago Bernabeu crowd, when the two teams met in the Champions League Round of 16.
But then, almost out of the blue, Mbappe ended up signing a contract extension with PSG and remained in the French capital. It is safe to say that most Real Madrid fans were not amused with how things turned out.
Yet, as the months have rolled on and Mbappe has continued to perform at the very highest level, the rumours linking him with a move to Real Madrid have never quite gone away. And with Los Blancos struggling this season, it feels like the fans are once again open to the idea of the French superstar arriving at the Santiago Bernabeu.
As reported by The Athletic, Mbappe wants to leave PSG to join Real Madrid, and would be able to do so in the summer of 2024 for free if he does not activate the optional extra year in his contract.
Mbappe update is great news for Real Madrid
Mbappe might have signed an extension with PSG but it was not a long-term one. His deal runs till the summer of 2024, with the option for a further year.
PSG have all the talent in the world going forward but just have failed to find the right balance all over the pitch. And if they fail to win the Champions League this season as well, it would not be a surprise if Mbappe tries to leave in the summer.
Of course, in that scenario, PSG would look for a transfer fee, while if he moved in the summer of 2024, he could do so as a free agent if he wanted to.
