Real Madrid need to sign a striker next summer. That is no secret. Karim Benzema has been struggling with fitness issues throughout this campaign and is 35 years of age. On the other hand, Mariano Diaz has barely featured and is expected to be on his way out of the club, when his contract runs out at the end of the ongoing campaign. Thus, Los Blancos must bring in reinforcements up top.

Rumours have suggested though that Real Madrid will only look for a short-term fix up top next summer. A striker who can come in and do the job as Benzema’s cover for just one season, and guarantees goals.

Keeping all that in mind, there might be very few players in the world who could fit that role better than Olivier Giroud. The French World Cup winner currently plays for AC Milan.

His current deal with the Italian champions is set to run out in the summer though. That means that Giroud could be available as a free agent, which might make him even more attractive to Real Madrid.

Real Madrid should sign French World Cup winner on free transfer next summer

Of course, a lot of people might raise their eyebrows at the suggestion of signing Giroud. But if the club are indeed looking for only a short-term option, then the move makes perfect sense.

Giroud has scored everywhere he has been. He might not be a free-scoring striker like Benzema, but the 36-year-old certainly knows his way to the back of the net.

He showed that at the recent World Cup. Giroud scored 4 goals in the tournament and was one of the major reasons behind France’s run to the final. He had been the starting number 9 for Les Bleus, when they had won the competition four years back.

On top of everything else, Giroud is a proven winner. If Real Madrid can get a player of his quality and experience on a free transfer, then that would have to be considered a major coup for the club. Of course, it is very possible that he might extend his contract with AC Milan.
