Many Real Madrid fans were not happy when they saw Joao Cancelo complete a loan move to Bayern Munich from Manchester City in January. Los Blancos have been in need of strengthening their ranks at full-back for quite some time now, and supporters were left wondering why they did not end up making a push for the Portuguese star.

Cancelo might have struggled for game time at Manchester City before leaving, but he was considered as one of the best full-back on the planet not too long ago. And he is showing his quality since joining Bayern Munich as well.

Thus, Real Madrid could have done with someone like Cancelo, since he was available on loan. And there have been plenty of rumours about why a move did not happen. There have been some which suggest that the club never made an offer, while others have claimed that one was rejected.

Cancelo has broken his silence about the matter recently though, and admitted that being linked with a club like Real Madrid would be a pleasure for him. As reported by GOAL, he told Movistar Plus after Bayern Munich’s round of 16 Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain:

"“I did not receive the offer. The truth is that no, but if they say it… I don’t know.“If a club like Madrid is behind me, it’s a pleasure for me because it’s one of the best clubs in the world. I think it’s a sign that I’m doing things right.”"

Cancelo is only on loan at Bayern Munich till the end of the season and then, it will be interesting to see what they decide to do. The German club are believed to have an option to buy included in the deal of around €70 million.

That is a steep figure to shell out for a full-back who will be 29 years of age in the summer. Thus, there is a possibility that Cancelo could be available in the future.

One thing is clear though, and it is that Real Madrid need to strengthen their full-back areas. They have already taken a step in the right direction in that regard and have a deal in place for Fran Garcia in the summer.
