Real Madrid find themselves in an interesting position right now, in terms of their squad. There are a number of players at the club whose current deals with run out at the end of the season, and they currently play important roles in Carlo Ancelotti’s team. One such player is Marco Asensio, who has had an up-and-down campaign to say the least.

Early on in the campaign, it had looked like the Spaniard was destined to leave as he was often left on the bench. In fact, it was a bit of a surprise when he stayed on beyond the summer.

Since then, Asensio has certainly played his way into Ancelotti’s plans. He is someone who comes off the bench regularly and makes the occasional start as well, as he did in the Derby against Atletico Madrid.

As reported by Sky Sports, Ancelotti said regarding Asensio’s situation at Real Madrid:

"“He looks good to me, so I don’t know if he stays or not.“Maybe he does, maybe he doesn’t. I don’t care much. We have some important challenges this season. The most important thing is that he contributes like last year.“Let him continue as he is doing now. Then the club makes the most appropriate decision in the end.”"

Ancelotti admits Real Madrid player could leave with contract running out

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Asensio has scored 6 goals and provided 5 assists in 31 appearances and 1141 minutes of football in total.

We have seen both sides of Asensio in recent weeks. His performance against Atletico Madrid came under a lot of criticism. It was frustrating display and it felt like the Spaniard was just trying too hard to make things happen. At the same time though, he has scored 3 goals in his last 5 La Liga appearances.

Thus, Asensio is definitely a good player to have around. He has proven himself in La Liga and can make an impact off the bench. Every player on the roster cannot be a starter and Real Madrid certainly need what the Spaniard brings to the table.

Thus, the best case scenario might be him extending his contract and staying on at Santiago Bernabeu. Let’s see what the future holds though.
