Real Madrid were linked with a move for Joao Cancelo, before he made a loan move to Bayern Munich in January out of the blue. Many fans wondered why Los Blancos had not pushed more to bring the Portuguese international to Santiago Bernabeu. And recently, they have been linked with another one of Pep Guardiola’s players, although it looks like this is headed nowhere as well.

The player in question is none other than Julian Alvarez. The Argentine completed a move to Manchester City from River Plate last year. But with Erling Haaland present in the squad, he has failed to establish himself as a regular starter, when everybody is fit and available.

When he is on the pitch, he has no problem finding the back of the net. According to stats from Transfermarkt, Alvarez has scored 10 goals and provided 3 assists in 31 appearances and 1540 minutes of football.

Thus, some rumours broke out recently that Alvarez could be looking to leave Manchester City in search of regular playing time. But it looks like that might not be the case after all.

Manchester City player is set to reject Real Madrid

As reported by Football Insider, Manchester City expect to agree a new contract with Alvarez. Real Madrid and Barcelona wanted to take advantage of his backup status but sources with knowledge of his situation have revealed that he is “very happy” at the Etihad Stadium.

Thus, it looks like an interest in Alvarez is set to lead nowhere for the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid. At least for the time being.

Alvarez is way too good to be a back up option for much longer though. He was instrumental in Argentina winning the World Cup, scoring four goals at the tournament. And he has shown his value for Manchester City when he has been on the pitch as well.
