Real Madrid’s big signing of the summer was Aurelien Tchouameni, who arrived from AS Monaco in a €80 million deal. The Frenchman made a superb start to the campaign as well, as it looked like he had expertly filled the hole left behind by Casemiro, who joined Manchester United. But as the season has progressed, things have taken a downturn.

Tchouameni has picked up a couple of fitness issues this season. And his form recently has not been close to what it was at the start of the campaign.

To be very honest, it feels like Eduardo Camavinga has moved ahead of him in the pecking order and Tchouameni’s place in the starting XI is now in question. The situation was exactly the opposite in the first half of the campaign.

His primary duty is as a defensive midfielder, but Tchouameni is expected to produce the goods in the final third as well. His numbers going forward have not been good though. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 0 goals and provided 2 assists in 29 appearances this season. Compare that to Casemiro, who has already scored five times in a Manchester United shirt.

Now, the task is to find out what the issue is with Tchouameni. Is he struggling to perform at the same level following his injury? Or have opposition coaches found better ways to neutralise him as the season has progressed?

One also cannot completely overlook the fact that he did miss a penalty kick in a World Cup final. That must have had some sort of an impact as well.

Whatever maybe the case, there is no doubt that Tchouameni is a very good player. We have seen that in the first half of the campaign. And hopefully he will rediscover his best moving forward.
