A lot has been made about Real Madrid’s recent form. After their historic 5-2 win vs Liverpool away at Anfield, the hope was that Los Blancos would go on a big run and bring their campaign back on track. The opposite has been the case, as they have not won any of their next three matches.
Real Madrid drew 1-1 against Atletico Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu, even though Diego Simeone’s side were down to ten men. Then they lost 1-0 at home to Barcelona in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals. And that was followed by a goalless draw against Real Betis.
As a result, the upcoming match against Espanyol has taken on greater importance. Real Madrid simply cannot afford to drop any more points from here on forward, if they are to have any hope of turning the title race on its head and retaining the league.
There is some bad news though. Earlier rumours had emerged that Karim Benzema had exercised inside the Valdebebas facilities on Wednesday. And it looks like he could be a doubt for the game against Espanyol.
Real Madrid superstar misses training and a doubt for next match vs Espanyol
As tweeted out by Melchor Ruiz, it remains to be seen how the situation of Benzema evolves in the coming days. David Alaba and Ferland Mendy are out against Espanyol.
A lot has been made of the recent form of Benzema. Often, it has been a reflection of the performance of the entire team.
Against Liverpool, Benzema was great and scored twice. Real Madrid won 5-2 on that night. But since then, he has been very disappointing and not scored a single goal. And unsurprisingly, Los Blancos have not won any of those three games. Thus, one can only hope that the Ballon d’Or holder is back to full fitness and top form as soon as possible.
