Kylian Mbappe surprised the footballing world, by signing a contract extension with PSG last year, when it had looked like he was destined to join Real Madrid as a free agent. In hindsight, it might have been the wrong decision on the part of the Frenchman, as he saw his team get knocked out of the Champions League once again.

Despite so many huge names up front, PSG could not score a single goal over the two legs against Bayern Munich in the Champions League round of 16. And while both Mbappe and Lionel Messi have been in superb form this season, as a whole, there team looks pretty unbalanced and does not seem to have the strength to compete for the top prize in Europe.

Unsurprisingly, questions are swirling about the future of Mbappe once again. And the rumours linking him with a move to Real Madrid have never really gone away, despite of his contract extension.

For now, Mbappe seems to be completely focused on the task at hand at PSG. As reported by Express, the Frenchman told reporters after the match against Bayern Munich:

"“Am I thinking about my future? No, no, I’m calm. The only thing that matters to me this season is winning the championship. Afterwards, we’ll see.”"

Thus, Mbappe has his eye on winning Ligue 1 with PSG right now. But at the same time, he made no long-term commitment about staying at the club.

Mbappe’s contract extension was not for a long period of time either. It runs for two seasons, with the player having the option to extend it by another season if he wants to.

With the way things have gone for Mbappe at PSG, not winning the Champions League in six attempts, it will be very interesting to see how long he remains in the French capital. On a domestic level, he does not have much left to achieve and even became the club’s all-time top scorer recently.
