It would be safe to say that Eden Hazard’s time at Real Madrid has not been a success. The club shattered their transfer record to sign the Belgian from Chelsea. And at that point of time, it made a lot of sense. He had established himself as a Premier League legend during his seven years at Stamford Bridge and was without doubt amongst the best players in the world in the prime of his career.
Many felt that it was almost a guarantee that he would succeed at Real Madrid and become the face of the team. Things have not gone according to plans though.
Hazard’s time at Real Madrid has been littered with injuries. And almost four years later, it is clear that he is no longer the player that he once was.
He seems to have completely lost his place in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans. He last appeared in a La Liga game back in September. His last overall appearance for the club was in early January against Cacereno. As a result, the best step for both parties might be for him to leave in the summer. Yet, it looks like Hazard is not planning to do so.
Hazard confirms plans about Real Madrid future
As reported by AS, Hazard said while speaking to RTBF:
"“I would like to stay. I’ve always said that. I hope to play to prove that I can still do it. People have doubts, it’s normal. I understand that very well. But for me, I’m still here next year. You never know, but a transfer is not in the plan.”"
It does not feel like there are many, if any, chances left for Hazard to bring his Real Madrid career back on track. It might be time to admit that it is not going to happen and just move on.
Hazard still has a year left on his contract with the club after this season though and it looks like he plans to see it out. Will he get more playing time moving forward? It remains to be seen. But it does not feel like anything will change between now and the end of the campaign.
